I debated about even writing this post because I’ve been in the WORST reading slump since I started blogging! As someone who reads for relaxation and fun, it’s disheartening to not have a book to look forward to at the end of the day…I”m sure so many of you know the feeling.  Needless to say, my Fall TBR has let me down significantly as just about everything I was looking forward to has flopped for me. Some of the titles I’ve tried and put into my DNF (did not finish) pile include: Manhattan Beach By Jennifer Egan, Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak, Start Without Me by Joshua Feldman, and The Best Kind of People by Zoe Whittall. One that started off strong for me,  then quickly lost steam ( I just don’t love flashbacks) resulting in me super skim reading to find out how it ended was Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughn. I’m confident I’ll get back on track soon whether it’s with one of my 2018 reads ( read on to find out which one) or something from my backlist…I know my next great read is around the corner:) In the meantime, I’m working on a couple non-review posts I hope you’ll enjoy and I’ve finally gotten around to watching the first episode of This Is Us from season 1!! I’m so late to this show but I can see why everyone loves it.

This beauty dropped onto my front porch late Saturday afternoon and I can’t tell you how excited I was to get it! I absolutely loved and still regularly recommend The Last Child which I read several years ago and this is the much anticipated sequel. I’ve only read a few pages so far but I’m really liking it and the vibe is not at all what I expected. I’ll hold off on a full review until pub date (Feb 27th, 2018) but I’ll be sure to give you a sneak peak with my thoughts when I’ve finished.

I couldn’t ignore all the glowing reviews of this one any longer and I also couldn’t wait any longer for my library hold to come in so off to Audible I went. I just started listening but I’m super intrigued, especially since this is set about 90 min from where I live. The narrator is fantastic and I’m already looking forward to my next long drive and walk.

The fact that Lisa Gardner blurbed The Dark Lake and it’s one of The Book of the Month’s selections this month has me very interested. Sweet Little Lies is my treat to myself for my one year blogiversary and it arrived on Saturday!

What are you looking forward to reading this week? Hope you all have a wonderful week of reading!

  1. Interested in Sweet Little Lies! I know the perfect book will take you out of that slump! Aren’t they the worst! I wish I hadn’t spent so much time on Manhattan Beach (what a boring read). I just finished a 2 star and a 5 star book! I guess I’m balanced. hehe

    1. Thanks Holly, I’ll keep searching for that perfect book to knock me out of my slump for sure! I think so many of us couldn’t get into Manhattan Beach which is a bummer, the premise sounded so good. You’re even with a 2 & 5 star!!

  2. Ugh – I’m sorry about your slump (I’m in one too!) and also sorry to hear about the DNFs for Start Without Me and Anatomy of a Scandal…I have both of those on my list – UGH!! I also DNF’d Manhattan Beach and Seven Days of Us.

I think Little Fires Everywhere will turn things around for you! I switched to Nonfiction for a change of pace and my library hold for Heart’s Invisible Furies just came in, so will pick that up after I finish my current book…hoping that will turn things around for me!

    1. I can’t wait to hear if you like Heart’s Sarah, I hope it’ll be the perfect read for you to get you out of your slump! You might like Anatomy of a Scandal, I think plenty will but I’m just not one who likes flashbacks all that much. Let’s hope we all have fantastic books to talk about next week!!

  3. Oh know, i knew you were slumping but I didn’t know it was this bad, such a shame about Anatomy of a Scandal, I’m really looking forward to reading that one. Do you think you DNFd the other books because you’re slumpin’ at the moment, would you try them again or are hey forever in the DNF pile?

    1. I know, it’s bad Janel!! I’m sure many will like Anatomy of a Scandal but I think the flashbacks killed the pace of the present day action for me. I’m not a fan of flashbacks in general though so you may very well love that book! The only book on that DNF list I might try again is Start Without Me. I didn’t give that one too long and if others like it I’ll give it another try.

  4. Grrrr…The great fall slump of 2017. So many of us are feeling it.

You made the right call on Seven Days of Us. I honestly can’t see anyone liking it. I’m going to keep a close eye out for positive reviews, just to see what I missed. I’m at 75% in Start Without Me now and the further I go, the more I like it. It’s not a best of the year book, but I’m enjoying it. So glad the you’re listening to Little Fires Everywhere. I loved the audio and the story! Have a great week, Renee.

    1. It’s so interesting that so many of us are in slumps…is it the lack of quality books being published or are we picking the wrong ones 🤔Your review of Little Fires inspired me to try it since I needed an audio book for my walks and drives:) I’ll wait for your final thoughts on Start without Me to see if I give it another try

  5. I’m so sorry you’re in a book slump. They are the worst for us bookworms!! I’m glad you’re listening to Little Fires Everywhere. It’s a good one! The Dark Lake was my BOTM choice – can’t wait to read it. Glad you’re watching This Is Us!!! Such a fantastic show!

    1. Thanks Brandie, I thought of you Saturday when I was watching it…the first episode took me by surprise at the end. You were so right about it being so good, I’ve actually missed watching tv lately with all the book reading. We’ll have to chat about The Dark Lake if we both read it soon!

  6. Ah, the slump. My nemesis is Netflix, interferes with my blogging :). Loved Little Fires. Just finishing My Absolute Darling, word-of -mouth chatter brought me here. It’s not for the faint of heart, makes Ellen Foster look like Eloise at the TeaRoom. Do read A Gentleman in Moscow if you haven’t, or pass it to a friend. Toni

    1. Hi Toni, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I’m glad to hear you loved Little Fires, that seems to be a strong contender for getting me out of my slump…I just need to stop binge watching This is Us:) I tried My Absolute Darling and it was too much for me after about 30 pages!

I hope your Blogiversary gift is a fantastic read! Let’s hope next Monday you will be able to share with us that the reading slump is over 😊

  8. I am falling behind with my ARCs because of this King book but I have Little Fires and although I started it, I am only a few pages in. Hopefully I can pick it up again soon.

    1. I tried the King book on audio before getting Little Fires but I just couldn’t follow all the characters and wasn’t sure the story was pulling me in enough to keep going. It could be because it was audio…how are you liking it?

  9. sorry to hear about your slump, I hope you find a good one soon. I’m looking forward to starting LK Chapman – The stories she tells. I’m getting there with Adam Kay – This is going to hurt I’m enjoying it.

  10. Hi Renee, nice to meet you – loving It’s Book Talk 👍
The slump, huh? Happens to everyone. Nonfiction about reading/writing such as Francine Prose’s ‘Reading Like A Writer’ (which is what I’m reading by the side right now) helps me get through them. The way she talks about books, words, sentences, etc etc just makes me excited about reading.

  11. Sorry about your slump. I hope that it goes away soon. I enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere so hopefully you will too and that might help get you out of the slump. This is Us is such a great show. Full of heartbreaks but still addictive. Enjoy!
