Welcome to 5 on Friday, a little list of things I’m enjoying lately. I got this idea from Tim Ferris who sends out his 5 Bullet Friday posts to all his email subscribers and Laura Tremaine’s Secret Posts. If you’re interested you can check out Tim’s website at Tim.blog and Laura’s at 10thingstotellyou.com . I thought it would be fun to do a short and simple posts of things I’m enjoying lately. Every week you’ll find different content…could be books I’m reading, movies, tv, recipes, quotes, skincare, articles, household items etc….anything I’m enjoying to pass along in the hope that you might also find something you’d like.
Podcast I’m Enjoying
10 Things To Tell You with Laura Tremaine. This is a new podcast and so far I’ve really liked the first 2 episodes, one about fitting in reading and the other about loneliness. I love the easy way Laura speaks about topics and how she comes across as a friend you can picture yourself having coffee and good conversation with
Article That Perfectly Describes My Reading Life
What It’s Like to Be A Mood Reader by Jamie at Perpetual Page Turner. I love this article! I said yes to every item she discussed except number 9. Lately I’ve really been struggling with not being in the mood for anything I pick up and I don’t know if it’s because I have tried to read too many new releases that are leaving me disappointed or the fact that what I have managed to finish has been 3 stars or less. This tends to kill my reading mojo and steer me straight into a slump. Combine that with looming reviews for all the Feb new releases and I’ve been plain stuck! Anyone else a mood reader or struggling with reading this winter?

24 Fiction Books Coming Out in Feb That You Definitely Need to Read There are SO many books coming out if Feb! I’m really looking forward to The Last Romantics and American Spy
Book I Had Avoided Reading but Am Really Enjoying
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. I think this was a case of me avoiding this book because it was so hyped when it came out. I’m reading this for one of IRL book clubs and I’m really enjoying the suburban drama. The author has a way of writing characters and dialogue that feel real.
My Current Favorite Clay Face Mask
Alive Prebiotic Balancing Mask from Algenist. I know I’ve mentioned the Algenist skin care line before, I love their eye balm as well. I’ve been trying different masks over the last couple months, including several different sheet masks plus a peel off but I’m decided I’m partial to clay masks. This one is gentle and leaves my face soft but not tight. I think it’s especially helpful in the cold winter months . ( I’m not an affiliate just love this line of skincare)

Yay, I’m so pleased you’re enjoying Little Fires Everywhere, I loved it, and bought her previous novel based on enjoying LFE.
I know what you mean about mood reading, it’s difficult to manage new releases/reviews copies vs what you’re actually in the mood to read. I go with mood, this is probably the reason I’m sooooo behind with arcs 🙈. But if you’re not enjoying reading a book, then what’s the point 🤷🏾♀️

I agree 100% Janel! I go with mood as well and I’m VERY behind on ARC reviews. I say I’m going to stay off netgalley and edelweiss but I just can’t😂Hope you’re doing well!!

Yeah with the onslaught of so much fiction out in February — it can be a bit overwhelming to stick with one read or get a lot done. I’m also looking forward to American Spy. I’ll have to put on my blinders and settle down before the month is gone. Just a matter of finding which one is good for you.

I’m in the same boat, so many titles, I need to pick one and give it a solid try before moving on quickly like I tend to do!

I’m sorry that your reading is a little off right now. I hate when that happens. I’ve struggled a bit with what to listen to lately, but my reading in 2019 has been mainly good. I’m at 38% in The Last Romantics and really, really like it. It reminds me just a bit of Little Fires Everywhere and the comparisons to Commonwealth and The Interestings also hold up.
Nothing wrong with mood reading. I do it all the time! Hope your reading picks up soon.

I finished The Last Romantics on vacation last week and really enjoyed it. Now I have to read Commonwealth I think!

I’m a mood reader too and am waiting for it to hit me hard since I’ve been reading so many ARCs lately! I’ll get burnt out soon I have a feeling, which will be a bad thing, lol. I’m so glad you are enjoying Little Fires! I loved that book, but I love Celeste Ng. Enjoy! I hope your reading picks up soon.

Thanks Stephanie, it’s picked up! I want to try Ng’s Everything I Never Told You soon as well, I really liked her writing style

I love Everything I Never Told You! Honestly, I like it a bit more than Little Fires. It’s a book that I taught in my Contemporary Lit class for 6 semesters, and my students loved it. I think she’s brilliant at writing characters. If you read it, I hope you love it as much as I do!

Ha! I avoided Little Fires Everywhere, and also finally had to give in for my IRL book club. I liked it, but I loved her first book, which felt entirely different (hence my avoidance). I’m glad I finally read it though.
Beginning of winter was hard for me reading wise. I’ve gotten into a bit of a groove since the first of the year but I’ve had more meh books than not, and I’m always super motivated at the beginning of the year because it feels like a clean slate. However, I had a really long slump last year. It ebbs and flows for me. Sometimes, I have to choose to take a break and do something else for awhile (like binge-watch a show), and come back when my head is in the right place.
I hope your reading struggles are over soon!

Yes, my reading struggles are over! I hate when that happens. I also avoided Everything I Never Told You (I don’t remember why) but I want to read it soon! I hope I like it as much as LFE. Good thing we have our IRL book clubs to force us to read books we avoid:)
