Monday Reading Update

 

Hi All! Hope you had a good weekend. We’re still waiting for warmer weather here in Ohio, so in the meantime I’ve been taking advantage of reading under my favorite cozy blanket. I had a SUPER productive reading week last week, finishing 3 books, 2 of which I really liked although none were 5 star reads…close but not quite.

RECENTLY READ…

The River   was way more literary than I expected. I don’t mean that in a bad way because the writing was excellent but I thought it would be more thriller like and it really wasn’t. I appreciated the author’s obvious knowledge of canoeing on a river and wilderness survival along with his ability to create extremely realistic scenes. I wanted to read this book because I love nature and stories about wilderness survival because I would never ever want to go camping or rafting on a river…ever. I felt like I was there while reading this story though. However, I thought there was something lacking. I’m not sure if it was the third person narration which made me feel less connected to either Wynn or Jack but I was left feeling underwhelmed when I should’ve felt several other emotions.

Before She Knew Him was one of my most anticipated winter reads and it definitely ended up being addictive reading. I love how Swanson writes characters who are wacky and completely in your face about it! BUT, I ended up having thoughts…many thoughts…I’ll have a review up soon.

The Last Act was a such a fast paced, action filled read. The blurb for this contained so many of my favorite buzz words (FBI, prison, undercover, ) I knew I would love it…and I did. Review up (hopefully) tomorrow for pub day

 

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING…

American Spy also had so many of my favorite buzz words in the publisher blurb…espionage, spy thriller, FBI, passionate romance and betrayal…yes please! After the opening scene, however, the plot quickly fizzled for me with WAY too much telling and a second person narrative structure I didn’t like.

 

CURRENTLY READING…

The Devil Aspect  came on my radar after I saw Katie’s review at Basicbsguide  on Instagram. This creepy story centering around the “criminally insane” sounds like something I’ll love. I’ve just started it but I can say it’s drawn me in from the first page. Let’s hope my luck with quality thriller reads continues!

POSSIBLE NEXT READS…

I think I’m about ready for a thriller break before I start having nightmares about all the psychopaths I’ve been reading about! Both of these sound promising and would be much lighter reads.

October Reading Update: My Hits, Misses & In-betweens

Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a good weekend! Life is a little hectic for me right now so I wanted to do a quick reading update in case I don’t get any reviews up this week, although I hope to. Looking back over the last few weeks, I noticed I’ve been reviewing mostly 5 star reads, however, my reading hasn’t been all 5 star books, not by a long shot. I’ve had a couple average reads and I’ve DNFed many. I’m not afraid to put books down if I’m not in the mood or the writing or story isn’t working for me. Anyone else out there a serious mood reader?

Recent Hits

    

Both One Day in December  and The Craftsman will be published tomorrow, Oct 16th, and both are fantastic! (I hope to have mini reviews up soon) I’m so glad I gave One Day in December a try, you might think this is just another run of the mill instant love story/missed connection BUT I promise you it’s not. I loved the unexpected paths the author ventured down with respect to love and female friendship. Set over a decade, this had shades of One Day by David Nichols but also reminded me a little of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s type of writing style. I laughed, cried and just loved this book.  The Craftsman is another hit by Sharon Bolton…seriously, the lady can’t write a bad book! This story, filled with graveyards, coffins, an undertaker, murder and a feisty female detective named Florence Lovelady (best name!) checks all my boxes for a must read mystery. If you enjoy puzzling mysteries with perfectly spooky settings this book is for you.

 

The In-betweens

    

I call the in-betweens those books I didn’t love but didn’t hate. They fall in a shaded gray category and are my hardest ones to review. I’ve loved Lisa Genova’s Still Alice and Inside the O’Brian’s but Every Note Played was just ok. I found the main characters really hard to like and the story seemed to lack the emotional connection I felt with her others. There was an abundance of medical data and details, at the expense of the story, in my opinion. Night Film is a book I’ve wanted to read for a long time so I’m really glad I did. I had this in print and audio and chose to go with the audio because the narrator was amazing. I’d give him 5 stars and without him I wouldn’t have stuck this LONG book out in print. While I really enjoyed the creep factor of the overall story, I found it to be very dense and repetitive and the ending was, for me, anticlimactic and disappointing. I’m bummed about this one, I’d hoped to like it more.

 

The DNFs (Did Not Finish)

    

The Royal Runaway DNF 40%….I gave this a good chance to turn around but even with skimming this wasn’t for me. I felt no chemistry between Thea and Nick and expected more romance and less running around trying to be spies. Maybe if they were actual spies or even good ones this would’ve worked better but I found too many plot and character inconsistencies to keep going with this one. The Clockmaker’s Daughter DNF 10%…I know I’m in the minority for this but I couldn’t get into it. This is the second Kate Morton book I’ve tried and DNFed (also The Secret Keeper) so I’m thinking I might not be the reader for her type of writing style. I found the beginning of this too descriptive and the language flow and writing style wasn’t for me. By 10% I found myself confused rather than intrigued.

 

What I’m Reading Now

I thought I could wait until winter for this March release but I can’t! I need a surefire winner to read right now and Taylor Jenkins Reid never disappoints. I’ve only read 15 pages and I’m already interested in the story and characters.

 

Likely to Read Next

I’m in the mood for another missing person (not child) story after reading Night Film and I love Alafair Burke plus I own this one so it seems like a good bet.

Happy Monday everyone! I had a great weekend, not only in terms of reading but also because I attended one of my very favorite places to go every spring called The Gift of Light Expo which is a mind/body/health/wellness expo. I love it because it includes the opportunity to sit down with many psychics and if you recall my post about The Immortalists you’ll remember I have 2 favorite psychics I chat with every year. It’s enlightening and so much fun! On the reading front I had a bit of an ARC crisis last week as I tried to read a couple of my upcoming ones and I couldn’t get into them. I know I’m not the only mood reader out there, so those of you who are as well will understand that sometimes only a certain genre will “hit” you and for me this past week it’s been…wait for it…romance!! I feel like overall I don’t read a lot of romance but when I come across well-written, angst filled, juicy drama I just love it. Yes, I’m also a sucker for love triangles, that’s probably why I love The Bachelor, isn’t that the ultimate love triangle?? So, you may be surprised about my current reads but I’d love to hear from you if you have other top romance recommendations for me…your favorites and must reads…bring them on!!

RECENTLY READ…

Collide is book one of two in the Collide series and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing drew me in immediately and once I settled in with my glass of wine, I flew through this book in one evening. This was exactly the type of read I was looking for and I don’t know how I haven’t come across Gail McHugh before.  Pulse is book two and I also read it in a day. These definitely need to be read in order. While I liked Collide a smidge more, I did find a certain twist the author included in Pulse to be so surprising and unexpected that I found myself seriously considering throwing my kindle across the room! In the end, I recovered and my kindle is fine:) Check back later this week for mini reviews of both. ***In the meantime, if anyone knows why Gail McHugh hasn’t wrote a book in almost 3 years please let me know, I want to start Amber to Ashes but apparently it ends in a cliffhanger and the next book has never come out***

 

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING….

Well, I got to about 24% (kindle reading) which is a lot for a book I kind of liked but wasn’t really feeling and then I decided I really didn’t care about picking it back up. It wasn’t that it was bad either because I thought the beginning was great but for some reason the storyline stalled and I lost interest. As others have suggested I’ll try a different Bohjalian at another time.

 

PODCAST I’M LOVING…..

You guys know I love podcasts and true crime so I’m thrilled I found this podcast which has kept me busy through several long drives and house projects. Georgia and Karen bring a dark humor vibe to their show (they’re comedians) and I just love it. I highly recommend starting with their episode titled Project Artichoke if you decide to give it a try

 

UPCOMING READING POSSIBILITIES….

Both of these sound great so I may head back into dark and scary with The Sandman or  psychological tension and suspense with Tangerine. Of course I may also grab another romance to squeeze in this week!

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Happy Monday everyone! I’ve been on a reading spree lately with some really fantastic reads that I can’t wait to share with you. I think my plan of not continuing on with books I’m not enjoying is really paying off because I’ve had the best time reading lately, staying up late and not even caring about the lost sleep! What I’m also excited about is the variety of books I’m reading, many I might’ve passed by before but am giving a try and it’s paying off. On the movie front, we saw Game Night yesterday and both thought it was great. Funny and pure entertainment as only Jason Bateman can do. Two thumbs up for that one!

RECENTLY READ…

I’ll Be Gone In the Dark  (Feb 27) was a page turning, chilling account of one woman’s search for the serial killer she called The Golden State Killer. I’m no longer going to my mailbox in the dark after reading this…(my review will be up Friday but consider this a must read!)

Kill the Angel (Feb 20) was one of my most anticipated sequels for 2018. I loved Kill the Father  last year but this one seemed to be missing something for me. It was less complex and the main characters who made Kill the Father so great felt stagnant in this one. On a positive note, the ending was a nice surprise.

The Family Next Door (March 6) was my most recent read and I read it in about a day. This is one I would’ve passed by a few months ago as it’s touted as a domestic suspense and I tend to steer clear of most of those; however, this was getting rave reviews from trusted bloggers so I had to take a closer look and I’m so glad I did. I predict this will be a big hit so you might want to add it to your tbr’s now! I’ll have my review up next week.

CURRENTLY READING…

The Broken Girls  (March 20) Another one I’m really surprised to find that I’m not only enjoying, I can’t wait to get back to it and find out more. Typically I don’t enjoy alternating timelines or ghost stories BUT both are keeping me glued to the pages of this one. It alternates between 1950 and 2014 and I’m equally invested in both as well as the underlying mystery.

UPCOMING READING POSSIBILITIES…. 

The Italian Party  (March 20) I would read this for just the cover and title alone but I love that it’s described as “A smart pleasure” and “sharply funny” and the blurb mentions charming spies and prosecco so I’m sold!

Every Note Played (March 20) I’ve read and loved Lisa’s books in the past so I’m very much looking forward to this one featuring a pianist with ALS. There’s always great depth and emotion to her books so I’ll have my tissues ready.

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Hi everyone! I haven’t done a Monday post for a couple of weeks because my reading has been spotty but last week things began looking up. While I have way too many ARCs to get through I’m still finding time for some backlist reads which allows me to keep reading my new favorite author Kristan Higgins. I’m just loving her books. On the movie front, we saw 12 Strong which was fantastic and yesterday Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri which I loved but my husband, not so much. In fact, he gave it 2 thumbs down; whereas, I give it 2 thumbs up so go figure. It happens, we’ve agreed on all the other movies we’ve seen in January so a disagreement was due:)

RECENTLY READ….

Well I tried to hold off until March 6th, pub day for Bachelor Nation, but it was just too tempting! I started it late Thursday night and finished it Friday evening so…super fast read about my absolute favorite guilty pleasure show. I’ve watched The Bachelor since Trista started as the Bachelorette and I’ve only missed one season- Sean Lowe- he just really bugged me so I opted not to watch but I learned from Bachelor Nation that he was apparently the one Bachelor who had his shirt off the entire season…huh, who knew? For all you Bachelor fans, you won’t be disappointed and suffice it to say I’ll be watching the show with a new found perspective moving forward. If You Only Knew was my other read last week which I loved and featured on my Throwback Thursday post as well. That book would make a perfect book club book and Kristan’s writing is a cut above most other women’s fiction I’ve read in the past year. I’m planning on reading more of her backlist and anxiously awaiting my netgalley approval (hopefully) for her upcoming summer book Good Luck With That. 

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING….

The premise of this upcoming release (Feb 6) was intriguing and I’ll admit I fell for the marketing promotion comparing it to Tana French but the writing style didn’t click with me and then I checked a couple Goodreads reviews and I wasn’t comfortable with the relationship that apparently develops in the story so I put it down

 

CURRENTLY READING….

Can I just say I’m in awe of Kristin Hannah’s storytelling ability! I’m about 40% through this and I literally can’t put it down…I didn’t even want to stop reading to work on this post…it’s an amazing story and I’m not even halfway! I hope I can finish and have a review up for pub day this Tues Feb 6th but if not I’ll have it up soon.

UPCOMING READING POSSIBILITIES…..

Both of these are Feb 20 releases but I’m leaning more toward reading Kill The Angel first since it’s the sequel to Kill the Father which I loved and I’m anxious to get back to those characters. I have a busy week ahead so I may not be posting or blog hopping as much as usual. If that’s the case, I’ll catch up next week. I hope you all have a great reading week!

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Hi Everyone! I can’t believe it’s mid-January already although I’m kind of happy the month is flying by…I’m done with snow and freezing temperatures and ready for spring! I thought the cold temps would lead to cozy evenings reading by the fire but that is NOT what’s happening. I’ve actually only finished 2 books since Jan 1 which is shocking and perplexing for me. I have, however, started many and either abandoned them right away or in some cases (Grist Mill Road) at 35% into the story. So often lately the premise and/or blurb of the books I pick up sound so good but the actual execution or story development is disappointing.  On the flip side, we’ve been to several outstanding movies these last few weeks...The Darkest Hour, All the Money in the World, Molly’s Game and The Post…all excellent and all based on true stories. My favorite out of the 4 was Molly’s Game which was a juicy look at backroom high stakes poker. My advice is don’t google anything about the movie before you see it, just go then google!!

RECENTLY READ…..

I think I fell for the marketing of this one which is billed as one of the top thrillers of 2018 but I can’t say I found it very thrilling. I’m positive it’ll be a favorite of many and the movie rights are already sold with Charlize Theron starring but I had many issues with this one from the get go. It’s probably a case of it’s not the book it’s me but I have pretty high expectations for thrillers and this didn’t meet them.

 

CURRENTLY READING….

I just started this last night and while I’m intrigued and I like the writing style, it hasn’t grabbed me like I’d hoped. It’s early and I’ll keep going to see if I can stay invested

 

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO….

I was in the mood for an inspiring audiobook so when I heard Jack Canfield on Oprah’s recent Super Soul Conversations podcast, I knew I wanted to hear more from him. I’ve listened to about 5 hours of this and I really like it. Not all of the principles are new of course but that’s ok, I appreciate being reminded of what’s possible and I find the stories of the people he includes compelling and yes, inspiring!

LIKELY TO READ NEXT….

I read and loved Matt Wesolowski’s first book Six Stories last year and this one is really calling to me right now. His writing is so original and creative that I know I’m in for a treat. If you’re a fan of podcasts ala Serial, Making a Murderer, etc then you should really grab one of these books.

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I can’t believe we’re just about halfway through December! I’m pretty sure I’m done with my Christmas shopping and almost done with all the present wrapping so the rest of the month I hope to relax and enjoy the season. I’ve been jumping all around in my reading life so I feel that this month is a toss up of backlist reads with some 2018’s thrown in. Speaking of 2018 reads…I’m not having the best of luck with them. In fact, two of my highly anticipated reads were a bust for me last week, while another one I wasn’t sure about turned out to be a hit more me. I know I’m not alone, but what’s happening with the 2018 reads? Thoughts anyone?

RECENTLY READ…

 

I was very excited about both of these 2018 reads (coming Jan 9th) but expected I would like The Chalk Man better since it’s a mystery and partly set in the 1980s which always appeals to me. Turns out, I wasn’t impressed with The Chalk Man for several reasons, the biggest being that the alternating time periods and the character development didn’t work for me. I’ll have my full review up the first week in Jan and yes, I know I’m in the minority for this one! I suspected I would like The Immortalists based on the premise of siblings visiting a psychic and learning the dates of their deaths and in the end I REALLY enjoyed it. It started off a little rocky for me but I’m so glad I stuck with it because I truly enjoyed the characters and story. Review also coming early January

TRIED BUT DIDN’T FINISH…

This is another 2018 release (Jan 2) that’s being talked about everywhere and while it seems the majority of people on Goodreads are loving it, I only made it to 26% before I called it a day. The weird thing was I started off really liking the premise and the voice of Anna and I found the writing to be snappy and fast. However, the farther I got the more I found myself reading ALOT of details about Anna’s fascination with (& watching of) black and white movies as well as lengthy email exchanges between her and others and I became bored. Another psychological thriller that didn’t hit me.

UPCOMING READING PLANS…

I was seeing favorable thoughts about this one from trusted bloggers so I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve only read the opening chapter but I have to say while very disturbing, it grabbed me! One feeling I have right off the bat with this read is that this author’s writing is excellent, I love the way it’s flowing and the initial character development. Stay tuned:)

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

The holiday season is in full swing and while I still can’t believe it’s not summer…it seemed like just yesterday it was August…I’ve decided to get a jump on my shopping and as of now I’m almost done:) I actually went to the mall on Black Friday which I NEVER do and now I realize why…I’ve never seen so many people and such long lines there before!! In the end, I really only got amazing deals at 2 stores (Macy’s & Joseph A Banks in case you’re wondering) so I’m not sure it was worth the crowds. However, I stayed up super late last night shopping for cyber Monday, that’s why this post is so late, and the deals were incredible! Now I know why so many sizes are already sold out on Monday…deals started last night and things were selling out while I still had them in my cart. It was crazy but I stayed up and got SO many deals! What has all this meant for my reading lately? Well, I haven’t done too much but I’m planning on getting back on track this week

 

RECENTLY READ….

Although I hate this cover, I have a reading friend who’s been suggesting this book to me for SO long and I don’t know why I resisted reading it because it was great! It was an addicting read that I flew through in a couple days…look for a mini review soon.

TRIED BUT COULDN’T GET INTO….

It pains me to say that one of my most anticipated reads of 2018, The Hush, was a DNF for me after 70 pages. I absolutely loved The Last Child but this wasn’t similar in tone or plot and I found myself bored.  I’ve loved several of John Hart’s books and always thought his writing was outstanding but in this one I felt the language was too flowery at times and for me it felt bogged down in descriptive setting details. Also, there’s a supernatural element to this story that I wasn’t expecting and it didn’t work for me at all. Well, I tried to jump onto the Louise Penny train and I gave it until 40% but ultimately I realized I didn’t care about the murder mystery and the pace was way too slow for me so…DNF. I know people love her books and I wanted to as well and I really really loved the setting of Three Pines but in the end that wasn’t enough to hold my attention

CURRENTLY READING…

I had ordered this book for my dad for Christmas but what caught my eye initially when I saw it on Amazon’s new release list were 2 of my favorite buzzwords…undercover & FBI! When it came on Saturday I decided I had to read it first and I’m loving it so far. Tamer is a pseudonym and he’s currently still an agent which makes his story all the more timely. The writing is excellent and with every story he tells I feel like I’m watching an episode of Homeland, it’s very similar in tone and plot so if you like that show I think you’ll LOVE this book. You won’t believe what’s going on right under our noses in the world of undercover counterterrorism….it’s fascinating yet terrifying to say the least!

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

 

Hi everyone! It’s been too long I know but I have to say I very much needed this blogging break. I’ve spent time reading whatever I’ve wanted these past few weeks and I’m officially OUT of my dreaded reading slump!! I suspect all the ARCS I tried to read but couldn’t get into in early Oct. led to my slump which has led me to rethink the books I’ll be requesting and accepting for review in the future. As all booklovers know, there’s nothing worse than not having a great read to look forward to at the end of the day…or the beginning or middle for that matter:)  I decided to scour my backlist on my kindle as well as the library and I found some AMAZING reads over the last few weeks. In fact, I have several 5 star reads of books that have been sitting on my tbr for far too long! That makes me SO happy. Where the Advanced Copies have fallen short, my backlist has come through for me. I continue to kick myself for not having read them sooner. Read on to find out what I’ve been reading and listening to!

 MY RECENT 5 STAR READS…. 

Inside the O’Briens was the book that jolted me out of my reading slump. I read this in a day and I just loved everything about the story and Lisa Genova’s writing. I liked this even better than Still Alice. I’ll be honest though, I was initially mad at the author over the ending but the more I thought about it and talked with friends who’d read it, I can see why she did what she did. Will review soon

The Life We Bury was one I’d picked up long ago, read a few pages and put it down never to pick up again. Until a couple weeks ago. I usually love books that have been Edgar nominated or won so I decided to give this another try and I was immediately pulled into the story. There’s family drama, intrigue, an engaging mystery and characters I really connected with. Loved it! Look for this on a TBT soon.

The Nightingale What can I say about this beautiful, unputdownable novel that hasn’t already been said? This had been sitting on my kindle since it came out and for some reason I kept telling myself it probably wasn’t as good as others were saying, I wasn’t in the mood for historical fiction etc. I resisted it. I’m so happy I took a leap and gave it a try because I was captivated by this story. I stayed up until 2:00am to finish it and oh the tiredness and tears were so worth it.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is another I’ve passed by since it’s publication in early summer and one I LOVED so much. There’s nothing I didn’t like about this book but what I especially loved was that it wasn’t the story I assumed it would be. And it made me cry which I didn’t expect. Will review soon!

RECENTLY LISTENED TO….

The Stranger in the Woods was a quirky, super interesting story about Chris Knight, a man who spent 27 years living in the woods of Maine. This was a perfect audiobook. The narrator was fantastic and I couldn’t wait to walk or drive and find out more about how he possibly lived for so long without companionship, comforts of home etc.

The Wisdom of Sundays was a rare book that I actually preordered in print and then bought on audible to listen to as well. I love listening to Oprah’s Super Soul podcast and I couldn’t wait for this book. The audiobook is actually very different than the print which made me happy I have both. Oprah narrates and picks 1 Super Soul person to share the topic she discusses. It’s the perfect book to listen to for inspiration, grounding, and enlightenment. I learned a lot, highly recommended!

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO….

Dirty John is an Apple podcast I just started listening to yesterday. This is true crime and it starts with a bang…or rather a murder! This seems to be one of those true stories that’s so unbelievable I keep forgetting it’s true. I can’t wait to keep listening!

UPCOMING READING POSSIBILITIES….

I really have no idea but I might dive into a 2018 read or continue with my backlist, so possibly…

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I debated about even writing this post because I’ve been in the WORST reading slump since I started blogging! As someone who reads for relaxation and fun, it’s disheartening to not have a book to look forward to at the end of the day…I”m sure so many of you know the feeling.  Needless to say, my Fall TBR has let me down significantly as just about everything I was looking forward to has flopped for me. Some of the titles I’ve tried and put into my DNF (did not finish) pile include: Manhattan Beach By Jennifer Egan, Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak, Start Without Me by Joshua Feldman, and The Best Kind of People by Zoe Whittall. One that started off strong for me,  then quickly lost steam ( I just don’t love flashbacks) resulting in me super skim reading to find out how it ended was Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughn. I’m confident I’ll get back on track soon whether it’s with one of my 2018 reads ( read on to find out which one) or something from my backlist…I know my next great read is around the corner:) In the meantime, I’m working on a couple non-review posts I hope you’ll enjoy and I’ve finally gotten around to watching the first episode of This Is Us from season 1!! I’m so late to this show but I can see why everyone loves it.

CURRENTLY READING…

This beauty dropped onto my front porch late Saturday afternoon and I can’t tell you how excited I was to get it! I absolutely loved and still regularly recommend The Last Child which I read several years ago and this is the much anticipated sequel. I’ve only read a few pages so far but I’m really liking it and the vibe is not at all what I expected. I’ll hold off on a full review until pub date (Feb 27th, 2018) but I’ll be sure to give you a sneak peak with my thoughts when I’ve finished.

I couldn’t ignore all the glowing reviews of this one any longer and I also couldn’t wait any longer for my library hold to come in so off to Audible I went. I just started listening but I’m super intrigued, especially since this is set about 90 min from where I live. The narrator is fantastic and I’m already looking forward to my next long drive and walk.

The fact that Lisa Gardner blurbed The Dark Lake and it’s one of The Book of the Month’s selections this month has me very interested. Sweet Little Lies is my treat to myself for my one year blogiversary and it arrived on Saturday!
