Monday Reading Update

 

Hi All! Hope you had a good weekend. We’re still waiting for warmer weather here in Ohio, so in the meantime I’ve been taking advantage of reading under my favorite cozy blanket. I had a SUPER productive reading week last week, finishing 3 books, 2 of which I really liked although none were 5 star reads…close but not quite.

RECENTLY READ…

The River   was way more literary than I expected. I don’t mean that in a bad way because the writing was excellent but I thought it would be more thriller like and it really wasn’t. I appreciated the author’s obvious knowledge of canoeing on a river and wilderness survival along with his ability to create extremely realistic scenes. I wanted to read this book because I love nature and stories about wilderness survival because I would never ever want to go camping or rafting on a river…ever. I felt like I was there while reading this story though. However, I thought there was something lacking. I’m not sure if it was the third person narration which made me feel less connected to either Wynn or Jack but I was left feeling underwhelmed when I should’ve felt several other emotions.

Before She Knew Him was one of my most anticipated winter reads and it definitely ended up being addictive reading. I love how Swanson writes characters who are wacky and completely in your face about it! BUT, I ended up having thoughts…many thoughts…I’ll have a review up soon.

The Last Act was a such a fast paced, action filled read. The blurb for this contained so many of my favorite buzz words (FBI, prison, undercover, ) I knew I would love it…and I did. Review up (hopefully) tomorrow for pub day

 

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING…

American Spy also had so many of my favorite buzz words in the publisher blurb…espionage, spy thriller, FBI, passionate romance and betrayal…yes please! After the opening scene, however, the plot quickly fizzled for me with WAY too much telling and a second person narrative structure I didn’t like.

 

CURRENTLY READING…

The Devil Aspect  came on my radar after I saw Katie’s review at Basicbsguide  on Instagram. This creepy story centering around the “criminally insane” sounds like something I’ll love. I’ve just started it but I can say it’s drawn me in from the first page. Let’s hope my luck with quality thriller reads continues!

POSSIBLE NEXT READS…

I think I’m about ready for a thriller break before I start having nightmares about all the psychopaths I’ve been reading about! Both of these sound promising and would be much lighter reads.

Monday Reading Update

Anyone else spend the weekend in due to snow and ice? Here in Ohio, we got a heavy dose of ice and snow drifts which I don’t think will be melting anytime soon since we’re supposed to have below 0 temps this week:( I’m ready for winter to be over! What I was most looking forward to was lounging on the couch under my comfy blanket and getting lost in a good book. It didn’t happen . What did happen? I ended up DNFing another most anticipated winter read. I’ve been struggling with my winter reading these last 2 weeks that’s for sure. Is anyone else having this issue? I’m really hoping an outstanding 5 star read comes along SOON! If you’ve read something amazing be sure to let me know what it was in the comments!

RECENTLY READ…

As Long As We Both Shall Live  was a book I had seen pretty positive reviews for on Instagram and the prologue was especially intriguing. In fact, it had one of the best first sentences I’ve read in a long time so I thought it might be a psychological thriller I actually ended up loving. It wasn’t. You can read my mini review on Goodreads (here) but I found it to be predictable and in several ways trying to be a Gone Girl knockoff.

I was thrilled to get an early copy of Into The Jungle  since I loved her first book The River at Night  , so much so that I dropped everything and read it in one day. Unfortunately, I didn’t love this one. Although the level of detail in the writing of the remote location in the Amazon jungle was excellent (the author has clearly done her research), I was unprepared for the number of scenes involving animals being killed for food, hunting, sport etc. It was honestly too much for me and caused me to somewhat disconnect from the story. I’ll review closer to May pub date.

Maybe in Another Life  has been on my tbr for quite awhile and I had actually tried it in print long ago and couldn’t get into it. This time I listened to the audio book and really enjoyed it. Julia Whelan was the narrator and she made all the difference. The story wasn’t perfect by any means but still worth a listen if you’re in the mood for an easy romance.

 

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING….

Well this was surprising to me! Two of my most anticipated winter reads are DNF’s. I was really looking forward to Here and Now and Then for the time travel but the story and characters felt so bogged down in scientific details that I lost interest (DNF 31%). I fully expected to enjoy Sally Thorne’s new book after loving The Hating Game  but I didn’t like the main character Darcy at all. I know she was supposed to be edgy but I found her annoying. The writing seemed stilted, the banter off, it just wasn’t working for me (DNF 18%).

 

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO…

The End of Your Life Bookclub  is the true story of a mother and son who form their own 2 person book club during her chemo treatments. I’m early in the story but I’m enjoying the narrator and really loving the way this mother and son bond over their in depth book discussions. This feels like it will be emotional (I’m really liking mom) but also a very nice tribute to reading and books and how they impact our lives, even at the end.

 

CURRENTLY READING…

I just started The Nowhere Child , (Jan 22) (mystery/suspense) but so far I really like the writing. The set up… a 30 year old woman is approached by a man while on her lunch break at a school in Australia. He shows her a picture of a little 2 year old girl and tells her that girl vanished when she was 2 and he thinks SHE is that girl! I’m fascinated by missing people stories so I’m anticipating this will be a winner for me. Plus, it’s published by Minotaur Books which is one of my favorite publishers.

Monday Reading Update & Feedback Please!

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone! I can’t believe 2018 is almost over. Has anyone else been super busy this holiday season? I wish I could say it’s because I’ve been traveling but I haven’t, just a lot of busyness after Christmas. I feel like I’m finally slowing down but yes, my reading has suffered. I’ve read 1 book over the past 2 weeks and I’m starting to get frustrated by not having a book to look forward to reading at the end of the day. I’ve picked up so many books over the last few days and haven’t been able to get into ANY!  I’m sure I’m not alone in that feeling that happens when you can’t get into anything…like oh no, I’m never going to find another book I love! Irrational I know but I start to feel like that. This is also the curse of being a mood reader; I’m only in the mood for certain types of reads lately, namely thrillers or quality romance. P.S. Before I came back to finish writing this post I started a book …read on to find out what has FINALLY got my attention.

That being said I’ve also been thinking about blog postings for the new year and would love your quick feedback in the comment section. What would you like to see more of on the blog…book lists, Monday Updates, Top Ten Tuesdays, Throwback Thursdays, more reviews, mini reviews, discussions, etc? I’d really like to hear what you’d like to read more (or less) of on the blog. I’m trying to come up with a more consistent posting schedule so please share any thoughts you have. RECENTLY READ…

 

The Sandman  by Lars Kepler
Published: March 6, 2018 by Knopf
464 pages

My Thoughts: This was a fantastic, creepy thriller that also had a good mystery to it. I jumped right into the series with this book (book 4) and didn’t feel like I was missing anything. I love the main character, Joona, and the Scandi setting is perfect for a winter read. Plus, book 5, Stalker is coming out in Feb. If you love intelligent, plot driven thrillers give this a try

 

 

 

TRIED BUT COULDN’T GET INTO…

Scrublands  publishes in January and was a book I was really looking forward to. The marketing blurb said it was The Dry meets Before the Fall but while it was set in Australia like The Dry that’s where the similarities ended for me. I gave this one 40% but found it to be very repetitive and to have way too much going on. The Paragon Hotel  is another January release that sounded right up my alley. Set in the era of Prohibition there’s a single woman with a gun shot wound running from someone on a train bound for Oregon. The blurb says a good mystery involving a missing child comes up but I didn’t get past 10%. The writing and dialogue felt stilted to me and by 10% I had to admit I had no idea who was who or what was going on. If trusted reading friends love it I may give it another try. The premise ( a Serial like documentary with a convicted murderer) and introduction of Don’t Believe It intrigued me and I think I’ll revisit this one another time, it just wasn’t compelling enough to hold my interest right now (DNF 15%). I’ve had She Rides Shotgun  on my TBR for so long. It won the Edgar award for best debut novel which usually is a surefire sign I’ll like a book but while I know the dad in the story was an outlaw and “bad” person, I just found him annoying and didn’t care about the little girl. This is one instance I think if the author would’ve allowed me to get to know either of them before diving right into the action I might’ve been connected enough with at least the little girl to keep going (DNF 8%).

CURRENTLY READING…(as of about 2 hours ago)

Forever is the Worst Long Time  was on my radar in the past but I forgot about it unfortunately. When I saw it on an Instagram favorite books of 2018 post today I immediately downloaded a sample, loved it and promptly bought it! So far it’s reminding me of One Day in December  (My Review) with what seems like an interesting love triangle developing. I’m loving the dialogue and pace, so far so good which makes me really happy.

October Reading Update: My Hits, Misses & In-betweens

Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a good weekend! Life is a little hectic for me right now so I wanted to do a quick reading update in case I don’t get any reviews up this week, although I hope to. Looking back over the last few weeks, I noticed I’ve been reviewing mostly 5 star reads, however, my reading hasn’t been all 5 star books, not by a long shot. I’ve had a couple average reads and I’ve DNFed many. I’m not afraid to put books down if I’m not in the mood or the writing or story isn’t working for me. Anyone else out there a serious mood reader?

Recent Hits

    

Both One Day in December  and The Craftsman will be published tomorrow, Oct 16th, and both are fantastic! (I hope to have mini reviews up soon) I’m so glad I gave One Day in December a try, you might think this is just another run of the mill instant love story/missed connection BUT I promise you it’s not. I loved the unexpected paths the author ventured down with respect to love and female friendship. Set over a decade, this had shades of One Day by David Nichols but also reminded me a little of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s type of writing style. I laughed, cried and just loved this book.  The Craftsman is another hit by Sharon Bolton…seriously, the lady can’t write a bad book! This story, filled with graveyards, coffins, an undertaker, murder and a feisty female detective named Florence Lovelady (best name!) checks all my boxes for a must read mystery. If you enjoy puzzling mysteries with perfectly spooky settings this book is for you.

 

The In-betweens

    

I call the in-betweens those books I didn’t love but didn’t hate. They fall in a shaded gray category and are my hardest ones to review. I’ve loved Lisa Genova’s Still Alice and Inside the O’Brian’s but Every Note Played was just ok. I found the main characters really hard to like and the story seemed to lack the emotional connection I felt with her others. There was an abundance of medical data and details, at the expense of the story, in my opinion. Night Film is a book I’ve wanted to read for a long time so I’m really glad I did. I had this in print and audio and chose to go with the audio because the narrator was amazing. I’d give him 5 stars and without him I wouldn’t have stuck this LONG book out in print. While I really enjoyed the creep factor of the overall story, I found it to be very dense and repetitive and the ending was, for me, anticlimactic and disappointing. I’m bummed about this one, I’d hoped to like it more.

 

The DNFs (Did Not Finish)

    

The Royal Runaway DNF 40%….I gave this a good chance to turn around but even with skimming this wasn’t for me. I felt no chemistry between Thea and Nick and expected more romance and less running around trying to be spies. Maybe if they were actual spies or even good ones this would’ve worked better but I found too many plot and character inconsistencies to keep going with this one. The Clockmaker’s Daughter DNF 10%…I know I’m in the minority for this but I couldn’t get into it. This is the second Kate Morton book I’ve tried and DNFed (also The Secret Keeper) so I’m thinking I might not be the reader for her type of writing style. I found the beginning of this too descriptive and the language flow and writing style wasn’t for me. By 10% I found myself confused rather than intrigued.

 

What I’m Reading Now

I thought I could wait until winter for this March release but I can’t! I need a surefire winner to read right now and Taylor Jenkins Reid never disappoints. I’ve only read 15 pages and I’m already interested in the story and characters.

 

Likely to Read Next

I’m in the mood for another missing person (not child) story after reading Night Film and I love Alafair Burke plus I own this one so it seems like a good bet.

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Hi all, I know it’s been a little quiet on the blog this past week but I was on vacation in sunny Cancun, Mexico! I didn’t even take my laptop so I could just focus on reading and while I missed doing a little blog hopping, I thoroughly enjoyed all my reading time in the sun…it sure beats the 30 degree gray weather I came back to.  However, one very exciting thing to come back to was the return of Homeland last night! I think we saw glimpses of old Carrie which could spell trouble for her but I loved the season opener, it had a very domestic feel compared to the typical international happenings of years past.

RECENTLY READ… 

I finished The Great Alone on the flight to Mexico and have to say that overall I really liked it. For the first 70% (kindle reading) I actually would’ve said I loved it, but the last 30% changed things a little for me. I’m working on a review which I hope to have up this week.  Sunburn was interesting…it’s described as a cat and mouse story and it was but it also had a bit of mystery. This one was a SLOW BURN though and at times had me wishing the pace would pick up. I’ll have a review up soon but I think this will appeal to lots of readers. I’m on the blog tour this month for Killed which is the final book in the Henning Juul series. This was one of my most anticipated sequels for 2018 and it didn’t disappoint. If you like Nordic Noir I recommend giving this series a try, my review will be up next week.

TRIED BUT WASN’T FEELING….

I was really looking forward to this one after loving Me Before You but then barely liking After You. I was hoping Moyes would do a turn around for Lou and we’d see a different side, more of the old her from Me Before You, plus it’s set in NYC which was a major draw for me. I got to about 15% and wasn’t at all feeling Lou or the writing. There were pages of details about the apartment Lou was staying in, her walk around NYC, etc without anything happening and it just didn’t appeal to me. I doubt I’ll be tempted to pick it back up

CURRENTLY READING….

So far I’m really enjoying this thriller! The main characters Dante and Columba make a great team and are well developed but still both somewhat remain a mystery to the reader. I love that the story starts off with action (terrorist attack) and really doesn’t let up but it’s also a mystery at it’s heart. The Italian setting is the perfect backdrop for this type of story. One thing I will say about Dazieri’s writing…it’s dense and you MUST pay attention or you’ll likely miss important details. This isn’t a book you can skim or speed read. I’m not even bothering trying to figure out what’s going on, I’m just enjoying the ride.

PODCAST I’M LOVING….

In true book nerd fashion, I’ve discovered this podcast and have been completely binging all the episodes. This is hosted by writer Kelton Reid and I absolutely love hearing from the authors he has on as guests. He asks informed questions about their writing process, story development etc, all the behind the scenes makings of how the authors develop and write the stories we love. There’s also helpful writing and productivity hacks that would apply to bloggers as well.

UPCOMING READING POSSIBILITIES….

I’m seeing so many positive reviews for The Storm King and the blurb has buzzwords like dark secrets and unsolved mystery which make it a must read for me. After reading and loving Distress Signals last year, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Howard’s new one. I hope it’s as good as her debut!

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I can’t believe we’re just about halfway through December! I’m pretty sure I’m done with my Christmas shopping and almost done with all the present wrapping so the rest of the month I hope to relax and enjoy the season. I’ve been jumping all around in my reading life so I feel that this month is a toss up of backlist reads with some 2018’s thrown in. Speaking of 2018 reads…I’m not having the best of luck with them. In fact, two of my highly anticipated reads were a bust for me last week, while another one I wasn’t sure about turned out to be a hit more me. I know I’m not alone, but what’s happening with the 2018 reads? Thoughts anyone?

RECENTLY READ…

 

I was very excited about both of these 2018 reads (coming Jan 9th) but expected I would like The Chalk Man better since it’s a mystery and partly set in the 1980s which always appeals to me. Turns out, I wasn’t impressed with The Chalk Man for several reasons, the biggest being that the alternating time periods and the character development didn’t work for me. I’ll have my full review up the first week in Jan and yes, I know I’m in the minority for this one! I suspected I would like The Immortalists based on the premise of siblings visiting a psychic and learning the dates of their deaths and in the end I REALLY enjoyed it. It started off a little rocky for me but I’m so glad I stuck with it because I truly enjoyed the characters and story. Review also coming early January

TRIED BUT DIDN’T FINISH…

This is another 2018 release (Jan 2) that’s being talked about everywhere and while it seems the majority of people on Goodreads are loving it, I only made it to 26% before I called it a day. The weird thing was I started off really liking the premise and the voice of Anna and I found the writing to be snappy and fast. However, the farther I got the more I found myself reading ALOT of details about Anna’s fascination with (& watching of) black and white movies as well as lengthy email exchanges between her and others and I became bored. Another psychological thriller that didn’t hit me.

UPCOMING READING PLANS…

I was seeing favorable thoughts about this one from trusted bloggers so I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve only read the opening chapter but I have to say while very disturbing, it grabbed me! One feeling I have right off the bat with this read is that this author’s writing is excellent, I love the way it’s flowing and the initial character development. Stay tuned:)

MONDAY MUSINGS…BOOK BUZZWORDS I JUST CAN’T RESIST

I thought it would be fun to incorporate some bookish discussions every once in awhile to break up the reviews…for me and for you! I love talking about books as well as reviewing them and every now and then I plan to toss out a book topic that interests me and I hope you’ll join in for a fun chat!

Like everyone, my tbr is exploding for the Fall and Winter and I’ve started to notice that I’ve been adding some interesting titles based on the fact that some of my favorite buzzwords have been in the blurb or other’s reviews. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has favorite book words…those buzz worthy words that when you see them in a book’s description you think to yourself  “I MUST read that book!”

 

Here are 3 recent additions to my tbr based solely on me seeing several favorite buzzwords in the book’s description.  

A Dark and Broken Heart (Published Aug 2017)…included buzzwords are anti-hero cop, NYPD, heist, drug lord, corruption, deception and redemption. Based on these it sounds perfect!

Glass Town (Publishing Dec 5, 2017)…Mystery, magic, London, disappearance, gangsters, unsolved case, gritty, secrets, and betrayals. This is possibly out of my comfort zone but I love the sound of it!

The Alienist (Published Oct 2006)…Gilded age NYC setting, murder, criminology, profiling, corrupt cops, gangsters…yes please!! I’ve just come across this one and it sounds amazing.

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I was making pretty good progress on my end of summer reading until the end of last week when life outside of blogging became very hectic. I continue to have quite a bit going on so things on the blog and social media may slow down over the next couple weeks. I’m hoping to at least keep up by doing some mini-reviews of these books as well as Throwback Thursday. I have high hopes I can get my reading back on track this week as well.

RECENTLY READ…

Camino Island is my book club’s Sept pick and while I really loved the Florida setting and the heist theme with books as a backdrop, I thought there was quite a bit of fluff and filler in the story.

Castle of Water was a book I was seeing REPEATEDLY raved about on #bookstagram so of course I had to try it and what a fabulous story it ended up being. At under 300 pages I flew through this in one sitting. Don’t pass this by…review coming soon!

Lie to Me almost didn’t even make it onto my radar due to it being a psychological thriller which would’ve been a HUGE mistake on my part. This was one fun, twisty puzzle that I half listened to and half read. The audio narrator is fantastic so if you decide to listen to this one I think you’ll be happy. Yes, it’s being compared to Gone Girl and while very similar in tone I enjoyed this one more! Review coming soon

 

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO…

The Mothers I know this book was very popular last year but I was never inclined to pick it up until the other day when I heard it talked about on the podcast Recommended. I’m about 30% into it and I love the narrator and the story so far.

READING NEXT….

Lightning Men I’m hoping to start this one today as it releases tomorrow! Early reviews are saying this is amazing so I can’t wait to jump in!

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I have to say, I think last week was a great reading week overall. I finished 2 books which may not seem like a lot but since one was almost 600 pages, I’m happy! I started several others last week searching for something that would draw me in within the first several pages…this is curse of being a picky mood reader….and I would say the book that most drew me in was Tennison by Lyndia Laplante. I was fully prepared to keep reading this tome (about 600 pages) but then my approval for a much anticipated new release (see below) came through on Edelweiss so I dropped everything to read that one. I will absolutely return to Tennison though, I was really liking Jane. Also, the third book in this series releases in the US in Sept. so I need to get reading to be caught up with the series.

RECENTLY READ…

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter was the book that I dropped everything else for last week! This standalone mystery/thriller was fantastic and if you missed my review you can read it here.

Blind Side by Jennie Ensor is touted as a psychological thriller which at first made me hesitant due to my not having the best luck with that genre lately but I found this to be more a combination romantic/political suspense which I was very pleasantly surprised by…my review will be coming soon.

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO….

According to a Source by Abby Stern is proving to be one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to since YOU by Caroline Kepnes, narrated by Santino Fontana. For me, the narrator makes ALL the difference and Therese Plummer is amazing. Plus, I’m a People Magazine & Entertainment Weekly junkie so this book is just plain fun! I have to thank Susie at Novel Visits for sharing this audiobook with me via Audible…I owe you one Susie:)

CURRENTLY READING….

I just started this last night so it’s early but so far the story has really drew me in…it’s creepy yet action filled in the first few pages and this book is getting lots of great reviews so I’m excited to see how it progresses. (Published Aug.1)

UPCOMING POSSIBILITES….

I’ve read the preview excerpt of Gone To Dust (Netgalley) and it’s SO good…witty and atmospheric! I’m dying to get my hands on this one when it releases tomorrow...it’s by a writer of the tv show Seinfeld AND as my good friend Joe from  BookReporter.com said..”It’s an ACTUAL mystery!” All of us die hard mystery lovers can appreciate this excitement! I’m also super excited to read John Boyne as well(another new to me author)…plus I want to get back to Tennison…is it possible I can completely shut out everything else and read ALL of these this week?? I’d sure like to try! I hope you all have a wonderful reading week and be sure to let me know what’s on your must-read lists this week…

IT’S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I’ve been really wanting to add some variety to the blog and I love reading everyone’s It’s Monday posts so I thought this week I’d jump on board. I really struggled with my reading last week so I wasn’t quite as productive as I would’ve liked but that took a sharp turn this weekend with a book I literally couldn’t put down…

RECENTLY READ….

Goodbye, Vitamin was an engaging, often funny, family story about the power of our memory. You can find my review here

Slightly South of Simple is my book club’s July pick and one I thought ended up just being ok which I mainly attribute to a particular plot development that I just thought wasn’t at all believable. I thought the writing, character development and setting were SO good but in the end that plot point was a downfall for me

The Force was my unputdownable read of the weekend! Seriously, at about 500 pages, I started this book on Saturday and finished it at 1:00 in the morning today and can I just say WOW. This is a behemoth, cinematic, multi-layered crime novel that every fan of crime mysteries/thrillers should want to get their hands on. Think movies like The Firm, The Town (my fav) and The Godfather meet the tv show The Sopranos, wrap it all up in a NYC cop story and you have The Force! Review coming later this week

CURRENTLY READING….

 

 

The cover and title of this book, published by St Martin’s Press (I’m having great luck with their books lately), completely drew me in! I think this is the perfect follow up to get my mind out of the heavy crime world of The Force 

 

 

POSSIBLE NEXT READS DEPENDING ON MY MOOD…..

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo   An unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress’s relentless rise to the top—the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Another one getting rave blogger reviews so I must check it out!
